Feeding Therapy

Feeding and swallowing disorders

Pediatric feeding therapy helps children accept and consume a variety of foods and decrease refusal behaviors associated with feeding. Some of these behaviors may be related to sensory disorders as some children may have difficulty processing the information they see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. Other behaviors may be associated with decreased oral motor skills which impact the child’s ability to manage the food properly.

Our therapists introduce foods through play as allowing children to interact with food items in a safe, play-based, stress-free manner will create long-lasting positive results. You may see your child participating in fun sensory integration activities or completing exercises to strengthen the muscles they need for eating.

Treating children with feeding difficulties requires a team approach. Our feeding therapists understand the value of consulting with other medical or therapeutic specialists to address any nutritional or physical concerns. They also provide families with strategies as the best results happen when therapy is reinforced at home in between sessions.
